What to Consider Before Building a Custom Deck
A deck can create valuable outdoor living space, but its success depends on more than just choosing boards and railings. The location, size, height, access, sun exposure, furniture, views, privacy, and relationship to the house all influence how useful the finished space will be.
Perez DBR designs and builds custom decks throughout northeastern Pennsylvania as part of its exterior remodeling services.
Decide What You Want to Do on the Deck
The size and layout should be based on actual activities. A small sitting area has different requirements from a deck intended for dining, grilling, entertaining, and multiple furniture groups.
Think about the table, chairs, grill, lounge furniture, planters, and circulation paths that may occupy the space. A deck that looks large when empty can feel crowded once it is furnished.
Connect the Deck to the Right Interior Space
The location of the door matters. A dining deck may work best near the kitchen. A quiet sitting area may connect better to a family room or primary suite.
If the existing door is poorly located, a larger exterior remodeling project may include changing an opening. That decision affects both interior and exterior design and needs to be planned carefully.
Study Sun, Shade, Views, and Privacy
A deck can feel completely different at various times of day. Consider where the sun rises and sets, which views are worth emphasizing, and where neighboring properties are visible.
Select Materials for the Project
Decking, framing, railings, stairs, fasteners, and other components should be selected based on the design, code requirements, manufacturer instructions, expected maintenance, and site conditions.
